Eight Capella Hospitals Recognized for Quality Advances by The Joint Commission

June 6, 2011

The Joint Commission has recognized eight of Capella Healthcare’s affiliated hospitals for significant improvement and/or consistent high performance in various elements of the core measures, inviting them to participate in a project to help other hospitals throughout the nation.

Core measures are a set of care processes developed by The Joint Commission to improve the quality of health care by implementing a national, standardized performance measurement system. The Core measures were derived largely from a set of quality indicators defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). They were carefully researched and have been scientifically shown to improve outcomes of patient care.

Hospitals that have dramatically improved and sustained their performance are being asked to contribute to The Joint Commission’s Core Measure Solution Exchange™, which was launched in April of 2011. “The Solution Exchange is designed to facilitate the sharing of success stories regarding how accredited hospitals attained excellent performance on core measures so they can learn from each other,” according to Mark R. Chassin, M.D., M.P.P., M.P.H., President of The Joint Commission. “Through the Solution Exchange, hospitals that are struggling to improve their performance – especially on accountability measures – will be able to learn how their peers have attained and maintained their high ratings.”

Capella’s most recently recognized hospitals include:

  • Capital Medical Center – Olympia, WA
  • Grandview Medical Center – Jasper, TN
  • Hartselle Medical Center – Hartselle, AL
  • Jacksonville Medical Center – Jacksonville, AL
  • National Park Medical Center – Hot Springs, AR
  • River Park Hospital – McMinnville, TN
  • Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center – Russellville, AR
  • Willamette Valley Medical Center – McMinnville, OR

Two of those hospitals were also invited to participate in the pilot-testing of the Exchange website in November 2010. Pilot hospitals were selected based on an analysis conducted by The Joint Commission of three years of performance measure data on eight surgical care measures and their achievement of three milestones: statistically significant improvement in performance on at least one surgical care measure; improvement that resulted in measure rates that met or exceeded national targets for the measure (typically rates that exceeded 90 percent); and improvement sustained for at least six months. The Capella hospitals among that select group were Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center and Willamette Valley Medical Center.
