The Hospital
Woodland Medical Center is a 100-bed, acute-care facility. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and certified by the American Heart Association as a "Get with the Guidelines" facility. The hospital’s 70+ medical staff members represent a comprehensive range of medical specialties, including Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, ENT/Head and Neck Trauma, Family Practice, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics/Orthopaedic Surgery, Pathology, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry, Psychiatry, Radiology, Rheumatology, Urgent Care, Urology, Vascular Surgery and Family Practice. The Community
The city of Cullman is conveniently located near I-65 between two of Alabama’s largest cities: 45 minutes north of Birmingham and 45 minutes south of Huntsville. The city is the seat of government for Cullman County, one of the fastest growing counties in Alabama, with a school system and park system that are among the best in the state.
Clarkson Covered Bridge is one of Alabama's largest covered truss bridges and the site of the 1863 Battle of Hog Mountain. The bridge is the centerpiece of a public park spanning a shallow creek surrounded by hiking trails and picnic grounds. Known worldwide as “Jerusalem in Miniature” the Ave Maria Grotto was built over a period of 40 years on the grounds of Alabama's first and only Benedictine Abbey. The 3-acre site consists of more than 125 miniature reproductions of famous churches, shrines and buildings. Crooked Creek Civil War Museum, housed in an old log cabin and nestled by a stream at the site of the Crooked Creek Civil War Battle along the Forrest/Streight trail, features displays of numerous authentic Civil War memorabilia. The uniforms, bullets, confederate money and the book of the civil war soldiers' stories paint a vivid picture of the battle. Evelyn Burrow Museum of Wallace State College began 64 years ago and includes thousands of rare and unique items, some from the Smithsonian Institute. The $9 million collection was donated to Wallace State Community College in 2004.
Recreation
A few miles west of Cullman is the William Bankhead National Forest, 180,000 acres of beautiful pine and hardwood trees. Bankhead is also the home of the Sipsey Fork, Alabama’s only National Wild and Scenic River, and the Sipsey Wilderness Area.
Cullman boasts an impressive city park system. Heritage Park is a 70-acre complex that offers baseball, softball, and soccer fields. You will also find a children’s playground, outdoor basketball court, sand volleyball court and walking trails within the complex campus. Hurricane Creek Park is a registered Treasure Forest and features hiking and mountain biking trails with amazing natural beauty, a swinging bridge over a crystal clear creek, waterfalls, hanging cliffs, primitive camp sites, rock climbing, shady picnic areas and Site: 32 on the North Alabama Birding Trail. Smith Lake offers over 500 miles of shoreline for camping, and 21,000 acres of clear water for fishing, skiing, and boating. Steep bluffs cradle much of the lake, with water depths dropping as deep as 60 or 70 feet just a few yards offshore. Smith Lake Park offers 200-plus tent and RV campsites, cabins, a swimming pool (in season), spiral waterslide and lake swimming, picnic area, and special events throughout the summer. Sportsman Lake Park offers a small-scale train which goes along the shore of the lake, fishing, a mini-Ferris wheel and a carousel, mini-golf, pedal boats, picnic area and paved trails for bikers, in-line skaters and walkers.
